Untold Stories of Somalilanders in Tower Hamlets: Part 2
Overview
Following the success of our 2024 documentary capturing the rich lives and unique experiences of Somalilanders in Tower Hamlets, Kayd Somali Arts is proud to continue this vital narrative in our upcoming production, “Untold Stories – Part 2.”
This new instalment aims to deepen the exploration of personal histories, cultural identities, and the ever-evolving dynamics of Somali communities in East London, offering viewers an insightful and nuanced perspective on the challenges and triumphs faced by these individuals.
Kayd Somali Arts & Culture, in collaboration with Tower Hamlets Council, is excited to announce our search for a film director to create a second documentary exploring the powerful stories of Somalis in Tower Hamlets. Building on our successful 2024 film, Untold Stories: East End Somalilanders, this new 30-minute documentary will delve deeper into the lives of the second generation, their experiences growing up in the borough, and the contributions they continue to make.
Project Background
For over a century, Tower Hamlets has been a home away from home for Somalis—particularly from Somaliland—starting with the merchant seamen who arrived at the docks in the early 20th century. Since then, the Somali community has grown tremendously, yet many of their stories, achievements, and struggles remain underrepresented in public archives and mainstream media.
Our first documentary shed light on the remarkable journeys of the earliest arrivals and their fight for Somali independence. Untold Stories (Part 2) will pick up where we left off, focusing on the second generation’s experiences in East London.
Why a Second Documentary?
Despite a rich history and a visible presence, the Somali community in Tower Hamlets has been overlooked and under-documented for too long. The first documentary offered insight into the founding families, ex-seafarers, and political movements. Now, we want to spotlight the perspectives of children and grandchildren of these pioneers—how they’ve navigated cultural identity, built community organizations, and contributed to the borough’s cultural tapestry.
Key Themes to Explore
During a recent community consultation, members highlighted significant people and locations pivotal to the Somali experience in Tower Hamlets. The new documentary will incorporate these stories and places:
